Current Openings

As our Intake Coordinator you will seek to initiate relationships and welcome clients to the firm, listen and understand their needs, and create a succinct summary for the lawyers. Essential functions and basic duties: include, but are not limited to warmly welcoming callers, listening carefully and asking questions to create an effective summary of intake calls. Callers may be interested in legal services related to Family Law/Divorce, commercial, real estate, business disputes and so forth.

As a Litigation Law Clerk you will provide support our busy downtown Commercial & Insurance Litigation/Arbitration & Business Law Team. The applicant should have strong “people skills” developed in dealing with law firm potential clients and clients. Familiarity with Commercial and/or Insurance Litigation is an asset.

The candidate should be inviting and possess excellent communication skills. The position requires attention to detail, the ability to operate well both as a team player and on individual tasks, ability to multi-task and operate against inflexible deadlines. Reliable attendance, and excellent work ethic.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating and monitoring administrative functions to ensure work is completed accurately and within established time frames
  • Managing files through all stages of the legal process, including opening and closing files
  • General administrative duties including entering time sheets as necessary and preparing accounts
  • Maintaining calendar and bring forwards
  • Conduct corporate searches, Personal Property Security Act registrations
  • Preparing, typing and dicta-typing court documents, pleadings and trial briefs
  • Drafting Affidavits of Documents
  • Entering dockets in PCLaw
  • Scheduling meetings, examinations and other proceedings

Experience/Skills

  • Knowledge of general corporate commercial matters
  • Civil Litigation skills and experience
  • Familiarity with estate administration and real estate matters
  • Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure and court practice and procedures at various levels
  • Excellent grammar, spelling and proofreading skills
  • Superior analytical, organizational and prioritization abilities
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong technical skills and proficient in Microsoft Office and Outlook
  • PC Law experience preferred
  • A team player who is resourceful, motivated and works well under pressure
  • Able to take initiative, set priorities and multitask
  • Flexibility and adaptability are essential

Intermediate to Mid-Level (5 Years +) Seeking Commercial Litigation Lawyer for suitable Entrepreneurial Applicant with at least a partial book of business, with a demonstrated aptitude for attracting clients, who seeks an early Path to Equity Partnership Participation. Compensation is performance based on a share of billed and recovered fees. The position will appeal to a Self-Starter who is committed to the practice of law, and who has keen analytical, drafting, advocacy, research, organizational, written and oral communication, social and interpersonal skills, and who has as a deeply rooted appreciation of professional ethics. Applicants must have the ability to work both collaboratively in a cordial Boutique Environment with senior, intermediate and junior lawyers as well as independently, as the case requires. Candidates must have developed an intimate acquaintance with the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure and Practice Directions honed on motions and in court during their years of practice following strong academic achievements at a top- ranking law school. Position requires an ability to respond quickly to the demands of a commercial litigation practice, including the development and deployment of a file and client based commercial litigation strategy, and experience or at least a demonstrable interest and training in one or more of the following litigation practices: business and commercial disputes, bankruptcy and insolvency, IP (especially trademark); internet and technology; real estate, condo law and commercial leasing, human rights, defamation, sexual harassment, employment law and estates litigation, including acting for those seeking or responding to injunctions, and other urgent equitable remedies. In addition, experience, and interest in insurance litigation, including coverage, cyber risk, defence and Accident Benefits would be an asset.

This opportunity will appeal to those who wish to maintain and build a Commercial Litigation practice (whether in court, in arbitration or as appropriate, before administrative bodies), who are familiar with the hard work essential to success in practice, have a marketing plan, are comfortable with the technological innovations demanded by modern practice, and who wish to assert greater control over their career prospects than may be on offer at other firms with an employer/employee employment model. Persuasive real-world experience in the following areas would be beneficial: history of direct retention by clients for legal services and involvement in the new client/file intake process, including drafting retainer agreements; drafting marketing or advertising material for legal services, including law firm website content; and regularly blogging and / or writing on matters of interest to potential clients of legal services. Candidates who have had business experience or interests and know how to meet a deadline, or who have an undergraduate business degree, would be among those who might find this position suited to their practice objectives, though we are open to applicants from a variety of academic and career backgrounds. Competence in at least one other language other than English is an asset, and candidates from minority and diverse populations are welcome.
